02Z 5th Gear Set

The Genuine 02Z311158A is a .658 5th gear set engineered for Volkswagen 02A and 02J manual transmissions. This upgrade replaces the factory .756 5th gear set commonly found in North American TDIs manufactured between 1996 and 2003. The set includes the large 02Z 311 158A gear, the small 02Z 311 361A gear, and the correct spring plate for the small gear, ensuring a direct fit without requiring modification of existing spring plates. Installation of this .658 gearset can reduce engine RPMs in 5th gear by approximately 13% (around 400 RPM lower at 70 mph compared to the stock gearset). This can lead to a quieter and more fuel-efficient highway driving experience, especially for those who frequently travel at higher speeds (70 mph and above) or on flatter terrain. However, users who frequently drive in urban areas or on winding roads at lower speeds (45-50 mph) may find the taller gearing necessitates more frequent gear changes. While compatible with NA BEW motored MK4 PD vehicles, cruise control functionality may be lost. It is also stated to work in MKV Jetta TDIs without issue. A transmission cover gasket is not included but is available separately.
