Overview

The GM 4L60-E is a four-speed automatic transmission designed for longitudinal engine configurations. It features electronic control and is compatible with Chevrolet's Small Block, Big Block, V6, V8, and I6 engines. The transmission has a maximum input torque rating of 350 ft-lbs for the 4L60E and 380 ft-lbs for the 4L65E variant.

The GM 4L60-E is a robust four-speed automatic transmission renowned for its electronic control and broad applicability. Originally released in 1990 as the 4L60, the electronically controlled 'E' variant debuted in 1996, featuring a removable bellhousing. This transmission is natively compatible with Chevrolet's 90-degree V6, V8, and I6 engines, and can be adapted to earlier engines with a GM Controller. Mechanically, the 4L60-E is constructed with a cast aluminum alloy case and has a spline count of 30. Fluid capacity ranges from 8.4 to 14 quarts, depending on the torque converter size (9.64" or 11.81"). The transmission has a relative torque rating of 360 lb ft and a length of 21.9". Its heavier variants, the 4L65-E and 4L70-E, offer strengthened components for higher power outputs. Found in nearly all GM rear-wheel-drive applications such as the C/K Truck, Camaro, and Corvette, the 4L60-E is also a popular choice for Jeep conversions due to its adaptability. However, it is not recommended for short-wheelbase Jeeps like the CJ5 due to powertrain length. Individuals swapping these transmissions should be aware of potential compatibility issues, particularly regarding the Input Shaft Speed Sensor implemented by 2008. The transmission requires a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and compatible wiring for optimal operation, with carbureted engines needing a Throttle Position Sensor.
