The ZF S5D 320Z is a robust 5-speed manual transmission designed for longitudinal engine applications, recognized for its precision and performance. Manufactured from September 1995 onwards, it features a reinforced design and is rated for up to 320 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque, making it a strong choice for various engine platforms. This gearbox offers a well-balanced set of gear ratios to cater to both performance and efficiency needs. The ratios are as follows: 1st Gear: 4.21, 2nd Gear: 2.49, 3rd Gear: 1.67, 4th Gear: 1.24, 5th Gear: 1.0, and Reverse: 3.85. These ratios contribute to smooth power delivery, from quick acceleration in first gear to efficient cruising in fifth gear. While the ZF S5D 320Z is known for its reliability and can handle power outputs of up to 300-350 horsepower in stock form, it has also been tested with upgraded gear sets to handle up to 1100hp/1100Nm in drag and drift racing applications. However, for high-power applications exceeding 500hp, heavier-duty options may be more suitable. With minor modifications, this transmission has been shown to reduce driveline losses by 2-3%, translating to a 6-10 horsepower increase. It is important to note that earlier E36 transmissions, such as those from 1995 M3 and 325i models, are not the same as the 1996-1999 E36 transmissions. Additionally, some components may require special drift installation tools during installation.
