The Shakespeare 5225-XT-AIS is a dedicated AIS antenna from Shakespeare’s Galaxy series, designed specifically for AIS transmit and receive performance, not general-purpose VHF voice use. Unlike wideband “do-everything” antennas, this model is tuned for the AIS frequency range (~162 MHz), making it a solid choice for vessels running standalone AIS transponders or receivers where consistent performance matters. It features a 6 dB gain in an 8-foot form factor, offering a practical balance of height and gain for many recreational and light-commercial vessels. Constructed with a fiberglass radome and a stainless steel ferrule, it ensures durability in harsh marine environments. The antenna has a DC-grounded design, which means it will read shorted on a continuity test (this is normal). It comes supplied with 20 ft of RG-8/X coax terminated with an FME connector, plus a PL-259 adapter for compatibility with most AIS and VHF equipment. Typical use cases include dedicated AIS antenna for Class B or Class A transponders, AIS receivers feeding chartplotters or PC-based navigation software, and installations where AIS is kept electrically separate from the primary VHF antenna.
