When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed, restricting coolant flow to help the engine warm up faster. Once the coolant reaches the thermostat's specified temperature (80° C in this case), it opens to allow coolant to circulate through the radiator, dissipating heat. Failing to maintain the correct engine temperature can lead to issues such as poor fuel economy, potential catalytic converter damage if stuck open, or severe engine overheating and damage if stuck closed.
