The BMW Genuine Parts thermostat is an OEM engine coolant thermostat manufactured by Wahler, the original supplier to BMW. This 80° C thermostat is crucial for regulating your BMW's cooling system, ensuring optimal operating temperature by controlling coolant flow to the radiator. When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed, allowing the engine to warm up faster. Once it reaches the operating temperature, it opens to allow coolant circulation and heat dissipation. Failure of the thermostat can manifest in two primary ways: if it gets stuck open, the engine will struggle to reach its optimal operating temperature, leading to reduced fuel efficiency and performance. Conversely, if it fails in the closed position, coolant circulation is restricted, causing the engine to overheat, which can result in severe and costly engine damage. The cabin's heating and cooling systems also rely on proper coolant circulation, so a malfunctioning thermostat can impact comfort. This thermostat is specifically designed for the S54 engine found in various BMW models, including the E46 M3, MZ3 S54, and E85/E86 Z4M. It also fits the Euro S50 engine in the E36 M3. The product includes a new o-ring to ensure a secure and leak-free installation. It is recommended to have Genuine BMW coolant on hand for the repair, as coolant will be lost upon removal. The "jiggle pin" bleed valve should be oriented at 12 o'clock during installation when possible.
