The 3M Automotive Adhesion Promoter, Sponge Applicator Packet (06396) is engineered to significantly improve the bond strength between 3M Acrylic Foam Tapes and various automotive surfaces. It is specifically formulated for use on low-surface energy plastics, including PPO, TPO, PP, PC, and PC + ABS. This promoter is ideal for applications involving injection-molded body side moldings, claddings, and other exterior trim pieces where a reliable adhesive bond is critical. Each packet contains 2.5 cc of a straw-colored liquid with a viscosity of 25 centipoise maximum. The formula contains components such as cyclohexane, xylene, ethyl alcohol, and acrylic polymer. For best results, the bonding surface must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants, requiring initial cleaning with an adhesive cleaner and isopropyl alcohol. The promoter should be applied as a thin, uniform coating, ensuring complete coverage. A drying time of 30-90 seconds is typically sufficient for a coating thickness of 0.002 inch or less. It is crucial to apply the 3M Acrylic Foam Tape within one hour of primer application, ideally immediately after the primer has dried. This adhesion promoter has a shelf life of one year from the date of receipt, provided it is stored in its original container within a temperature range of 4°C to 38°C (40°F to 100°F) and 0-95% relative humidity. Clean-up of the promoter can be achieved using MEK or acetone solvents. Additionally, this product ships by ground only, and next-day or second-day air shipping is not available.
