2-Piece Die Forged Aluminum Wheel. Weight optimized by FEM analysis. BBS has been flow-forming wheels since 1996. Flow forming is a procedure that uses a continuous rotational motion with 3 hydraulic rollers and tremendous pressure at high temperatures to 'Form' the inner rim area of the wheel. This process changes the mechanical properties of the cast rim area to increase strength, stiffness and impact over 'stiffness to weight ratio' which can deliver very high level of performance at a cost that is much lower than a forged wheel. The manufacturing process includes numerous sketches, drafts, computer graphics, and individual prototypes from BBS' in-house design studio. Each wheel is finished by hand. Liquid aluminum, heated to over 1,000 degrees Celsius, is low-pressure cast into molds, then cooled in a water bath, and remains at 400 degrees Celsius after seven minutes. All rims undergo X-ray inspection. Depending on design, the light alloy wheel is subjected to thermal treatment and the flow forming process, where the rim well is rolled out under high pressure and the material is compacted. Thermal treatment takes about six hours, followed by another round at over 500 degrees Celsius for strength. After a quenching water bath, wheels are put in a furnace at around 150 degrees for six hours to loosen up, improving mechanical characteristics. Highly specialized CNC machines process each wheel to its final dimensions. During finishing, each wheel is deburred and checked for unevenness. BBS employees inspect every alloy wheel to meet high quality standards before painting. The paint shop in Herbolzheim applies the base coat and desired color, followed by drying, painting, and special surface finish treatments using state-of-the-art technologies. Customization options, such as burnishing, pad printing, lasering, and ceramic polishing, are available at the processing center in Herbolzheim.
