The ATK HP79 is a seasoned OE roller block (1987-1995) Ford 302CI engine, meticulously engineered to produce 300 horsepower and 336 ft-lbs of torque. This base engine features a 4.040” x 3.000” bore/stroke, an OE 1-piece seal external balance 50oz crankshaft, and OE rods.
It is equipped with hypereutectic 9.1:1 compression pistons with moly rings, a hydraulic roller camshaft (219/219 @50 .498in/.498ex 110LSA), and a double roller timing chain for reliable performance. The engine utilizes OE E5TE/E7TE 62cc 1.77/1.46 cylinder heads and stamped steel 1.6 pedestal mount rocker arms.
Designed with a front sump oil pan and a Melling high volume oil pump, this engine is ideal for specific Ford applications. Recommended components include an external balance 50oz balancer and flexplate/flywheel, a Weiand dual plane #8020 intake manifold (not for factory EFI), a Pro billet RTR distributor (with upgraded melonite or steel gear), and an early RH inlet standard rotation water pump.
For optimal performance, an Edelbrock 650CFM #1806 carburetor, a mechanical or factory electric fuel pump (1987-1995 Mustang), Autolite #24 spark plugs, and 8mm spark plug wires are recommended. The engine runs on conventional/non-synthetic 10W30 oil, with a Wix or K&N oil filter. Timing should be set at 34-36 degrees with the vacuum port plugged on the carburetor, spark plug gap at .035”, and a firing order of 13726548. It requires 91+ octane fuel, a stock stall converter, and 1 5/8 headers for the exhaust system.
