A 4-speed automatic, electronically controlled shifter designed for rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles. It features updated gear ratios for better low-end acceleration and smoother shift quality. It has a length of approximately 24.25 inches and a dry weight of 220-230 lbs. It has an integrated bellhousing, most commonly fitting modular Ford engines, and a 28-spline output shaft. It is fully electronically controlled, requiring input from the vehicle’s PCM. Standalone transmission controllers are available for custom or carbureted builds. The 4R70W transmission has improved components over its predecessors, including a hardened intermediate shaft, better clutch materials, improved torque converter lock-up control, and a stronger one-way roller clutch.
