The BMW Genuine Parts 17111712641 is an OEM coolant expansion tank, manufactured by Behr, the original supplier to BMW. This part serves as a direct replacement for aged, cracked, yellowed, or deformed coolant expansion tanks in specific BMW models. The function of a coolant expansion tank is crucial: as engine coolant heats up and expands during operation, the excess volume is captured in this tank. When the engine cools, the coolant contracts and is drawn back from the recovery tank to maintain the proper level in the radiator. A malfunctioning tank can lead to overheating due to insufficient coolant levels. This expansion tank is specifically designed for E30 models from 1988 and newer, as well as Euro E36 M3 and Euro MZ3 models, including those with the S50 engine. It can be adapted to US-spec cars, but this conversion requires the full Euro cooling hose kit and associated hardware. Additionally, it can be used to convert a 1987 cooling system to the late 1988 E30 system, which also necessitates a new radiator and additional hoses. As a Genuine BMW part, it meets all original design, fitment, and performance requirements. It is TUV approved and comes with a two-year warranty. OEM parts offer the same quality as Original BMW parts but at a lower price point.
