The BMW Genuine Parts 17112229114 is a direct-fit expansion tank and coolant reservoir designed for specific BMW models. This essential component holds excess coolant, managing its expansion and contraction due to temperature fluctuations. Its placement at the highest point in the cooling system facilitates the expulsion of trapped air, ensuring optimal system performance. Replacing a faulty expansion tank is generally a straightforward process. If the tank is not mounted to the radiator, crimping the connecting hose can allow for removal and replacement without needing to drain and refill the entire cooling system. Signs of a failing expansion tank include an inability to hold pressure, leading to the coolant's boiling point lowering and potential engine overheating. Leaks from the tank or steam emitting from it are also indicators of failure. While a faulty expansion tank cap can sometimes present similar symptoms, it's a simpler part to check and replace. This expansion tank is compatible with BMW M5 and Z8 models from the 2000-2003 model years, specifically for 4.4L and 5.0L V8 engines.
