A core charge is a refundable deposit applied to the purchase of a remanufactured part. This deposit incentivizes the return of the old, worn-out part (the "core") to the supplier or manufacturer. The returned core is then rebuilt or recycled, reducing waste and the need for new raw materials. Not all cores are rebuildable; heavily damaged parts may result in a forfeited core charge. Common automotive parts that carry core charges include starters, alternators, engines, transmissions, cylinder heads, water pumps, clutches, turbochargers, CV shafts, master cylinders, brake calipers, and carburetors. Catalytic converters also often have a core charge.
