The Subaru EJ20X is a 2.0-liter, open-deck EJ series engine, known for its popularity in JDM engine swaps for USDM Subarus. This turbocharged engine features a 92mm bore and 75mm stroke, fitting within the specifications of many other non-STI turbo EJ20 engines from its era. A key distinguishing feature of the EJ20X is its higher 9.5:1 compression ratio compared to other turbo engines of its time. It was also Subaru's pioneering engine to incorporate AVCS (Active Valve Control System) on both the intake and exhaust valves, known as Dual-AVCS. The EJ20X came equipped with a VF38 twin-scroll turbocharger. This turbo, along with the engine's up-pipe, turbo, and down-pipe, utilizes unique flanges and gaskets, making them incompatible with STI spec turbos and exhausts without significant component swaps. Furthermore, the engine's dual-AVCS system can present installation challenges when swapping into USDM vehicles, as JDM engines use different cam position sensor pickups. Adapting the AVCS typically requires swapping USDM cams into the JDM heads or, alternatively, planning to delete the exhaust AVCS for a simpler integration. Due to these and other component differences, the EJ20X is not considered a simple or direct swap for most USDM Subarus. The high compression ratio necessitates careful re-tuning of fuel and ignition timing for safe operation in the US market, which may also reduce potential power and performance. Running E85 is noted as an ideal fuel choice that mitigates the hindrance of the high compression ratio. Sourcing compatible US parts for the EJ20X can also be challenging and more expensive, often requiring overseas components with longer lead times.
