The Volkswagen 027105273D is a used, solid (rigid) flywheel designed as a direct replacement for the clutch flywheel. It functions by storing rotational energy from the engine's crankshaft to ensure smooth operation and provides the essential mounting surface for the clutch assembly. Over time, flywheels can be affected by surface scoring, heat cracks, or damage to the starter ring gear, which can manifest as vibrations or difficulty engaging gears. Fitment is primarily determined by engine code and gearbox type, rather than body style alone. Key installation requirements include disconnecting the battery, supporting the engine, and removing the gearbox and clutch assembly. A flywheel holding/locking tool is necessary to prevent crankshaft rotation during bolt removal and installation. It's critical to use new, torque-to-yield (TTY) retaining bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications.
