The Flyin' Miata ATI Super Damper is a performance upgrade for 1991-1995 Miatas, specifically engineered to safeguard critical engine components from damage caused by high horsepower. For Miatas producing over 280 horsepower, the stock harmonic damper can be overwhelmed, leading to cracked oil pump gears, damaged bearings, and catastrophic engine failure due to sudden oil pressure loss. Flyin' Miata collaborated with ATI to develop this robust replacement damper that functions as two dampers in one, offering superior vibration absorption. This not only ensures a safer engine but also contributes to a smoother running engine, which is why Flyin' Miata includes it as standard on all their built engines. Installation requires a balancer installer tool for precise pressing of the damper onto the crankshaft. The kit includes a crucial belt guide to prevent rapid timing belt wear, along with appropriate installation lube, a new crank bolt, and a new woodruff key, providing all necessary components for a correct installation. While this damper is primarily recommended for high-horsepower applications to protect oil pump longevity, its vibration-dampening qualities offer noticeable improvements in engine smoothness even on stock-power vehicles. This damper fits all 1994-97 Miatas. For "long nose" 1.6L engines, it can be fitted by changing the water pump pulley and alternator to a ribbed belt system. It may not be compatible with all accessory belt configurations, though it works with Flyin' Miata's own setups.
