HIGH PRESSURE PUMP

The high pressure pump is responsible for compressing the fuel supplied by the electric fuel pump to the pressure required for high pressure injection up to 20 MPa (200 bar). It boosts the pressure of the fuel entering the fuel injectors from 50-80psi to as high as 2000psi so that the fuel is atomized prior to entering the engine for more complete engine combustion. This leads to more power, less harmful emissions, and greater fuel economy. Like other mechanical fuel pumps, it uses camshaft movement to draw in fuel, pressurize it, then push the fuel into a fuel injector where it is delivered to the engine. Signs of a failing high pressure fuel pump include poor performance, increased fuel consumption, engine not starting, and the check engine light illuminating. When it fails, the vehicle will likely continue to run but will greatly lose performance, have increased vehicle emissions, and very poor fuel economy. The engine management computer may store a fuel pump fault, illuminate the check engine light, and may even enter limp home mode, locking the vehicle into a lower gear and preventing it from exceeding 25mph. Replacing the Land Rover High Pressure Fuel Pump: This should only be replaced if it has failed. Some high pressure fuel pumps are equipped with pressure sensors that cannot be replaced separately, requiring replacement of the entire pump when the sensor fails. Located on the fuel injection rail, high pressure fuel pumps are often easy to access and replace, usually within an hour or two. However, due to the high fuel pressure the pump creates, replacing the fuel lines to and from the high pressure fuel pump is highly recommended but can be more difficult to access.
