This oil-filled unit is crucial for maintaining the operational integrity of the alternator and water pump belts. Over time, the internal piston seals can degrade, leading to fluid leaks, and causing the tensioner to freeze or become inoperable. This hydraulic belt tensioner is specifically designed for various BMW 6-cylinder models, including E34, E36, E39, and E46 chassis. It's important to note that these BMW vehicles may have originally been equipped with either a mechanical or a hydraulic tensioner, and this part is ONLY for those with the hydraulic system. Please verify your vehicle's existing tensioner type before ordering. This tensioner can be replaced during routine belt or pulley service, or whenever the fan is off the engine. Replacement is the recommended corrective action when the tensioner shows signs of wear.
