The Massive Speed MAEN'16233 keyed timing chain drive gear is engineered to resolve a long-standing issue in Duratec and MZR engines: the absence of keys or dowels on cam timing components. This lack of positive locating devices creates a risk of slippage, especially in modified or high-RPM applications, which can lead to severe engine damage. Massive Speed addresses this vulnerability by machining a proper keyway into new Ford/Mazda chain drive gears. This modification ensures that the drive gear is positively locked to the crankshaft, preventing potentially costly engine damage even if the crank pulley bolt were to loosen. These keyed gears and crankshafts are modified in-house at Massive Speed's headquarters in Spring Grove, IL, USA. They are sold separately, allowing users to acquire the components they need for their specific build. The cam gears themselves are not recommended for keying, as their ability to orbit during timing chain installation is considered essential, and the risk of slippage is lower compared to the crankshaft components.
