The Flying Miata NA Randall Cowl Intake V2 is engineered to overcome the limitations of traditional open-air filters by drawing in genuinely cold air from outside the engine bay. This strategic air sourcing, combined with the high-pressure zone at the base of the windshield, forces more air into the engine, resulting in a dyno-proven 5 horsepower gain at the wheels. While it adds a subtle intake growl, it avoids the excessive noise often associated with open-filter setups. Constructed from durable silicone, this V2 iteration offers a significantly easier installation process than its rigid predecessor. The kit includes a firewall plate that not only secures the intake hose but also serves as a template for cutting the necessary hole in the firewall, visually cleans up the engine bay, secures the clutch line, and incorporates a screen to prevent debris ingestion. Installation requires cutting a 1 3/8" (35mm) hole in the firewall using a hole saw, which is not included. This modification may not be permitted in certain racing classes, so verify local regulations. This intake is CARB approved (D-601-5) and legal in all 50 US states. It fits all left-hand drive NA Miata models from 1990-1997, including those with cruise control or shock tower braces. However, it is not compatible with right-hand drive models or the Flying Miata master cylinder brace. If used with a cowl washer bottle, the components will fit, but the washer bottle may be positioned very close to the intake mouth, potentially reducing the horsepower gain from 5 hp to approximately 3 hp. It's important to note that the power gains are measured with the hood closed; tests conducted with the hood open are considered invalid due to inconsistent airflow.
