Clevite main bearings are engineered to create and maintain an oil film between the bearing and the rotating shaft. This oil film, generated by shaft rotation, prevents direct metal-on-metal contact. The strategic grooving in the bearing helps manage lubrication. Modern Clevite main bearings minimize grooving for a thicker, more stable oil film, enhancing safety and extending bearing life. Upper main bearing shells retain a groove to supply oil to the connecting rods. Research indicates a 180° groove on the top shell is optimal, as extending it into the lower half can reduce performance.
