Overview

The Supermiata QMAX Coolant Reroute is a performance cooling system modification for 1990-2005 MX5 Miata models. Designed by a race team, it addresses common overheating issues caused by the factory engine's coolant flow path, which was originally intended for a front-wheel-drive configuration. This reroute helps to significantly reduce coolant temperatures, preventing ignition timing reduction and improving fuel economy.
Show original supplier description
The Supermiata QMAX Coolant Reroute is a competition-proven modification designed to optimize the cooling system of 1990-2005 MX5 Miata models. The B-series engine in the Miata features a coolant flow path that, in its original front-wheel-drive application, was highly efficient. However, when adapted for the Miata's rear-wheel-drive layout, this path becomes suboptimal, leading to common overheating issues. The QMAX system features a low-profile adapter that retains the original front-to-back coolant flow, drastically reducing engine temperatures. Constructed from durable 7075 T-6 aluminum, the QMAX reroute housing is internally machined and radiused to maximize coolant velocity for improved cooling efficiency. It is fully compatible with turbocharged setups, as used in some of the fastest track Miatas. The kit retains the OEM coolant temp sensor location, eliminating the need to modify the wiring harness, and includes two spare 1/8" NPT ports for aftermarket sensors. All critical hardware is stainless steel for enhanced durability. The system uses a simple, sealed adapter design that eliminates gaskets and leak-prone threaded fittings, ensuring zero leaks. A convenient bleed port is included for easier system bleeding, and the integrated thermostat housing simplifies installation and improves reliability. The kit comes complete with a high-flow 195° thermostat, but an optional 180° thermostat is available for competition builds with programmable ECUs. Installation is estimated to take a few hours for an average mechanic using common hand tools. The kit includes all necessary components for installation, such as the reroute housing, thermostat cover, optional head coolant port block off plate, coolant neck block off plate, various bolts, retaining ring, NPT plugs, bleed screw assembly, hose clamps, a brass barb fitting, a drain plug, reinforced silicone hose, the high-flow thermostat, and sealant. Specialty tools recommended include internal snap ring pliers, metric allen keys, a plastic razor scraper, and a Lisle 24680 funnel. Note that while the kit generally allows retention of the stock EGR pipe, some variations may require bending the pipe for clearance. The provided high-flow thermostat is specifically designed for the Qmax coolant reroute and does not fit stock MX5 Miata cooling systems or other reroute systems. An optional cylinder head block off plate is available if you intend to remove the OEM water neck.
