RA 13B Super Seals

The Rotary Aviation RA 13B Super Seals represent a significant advancement in apex seal technology, specifically developed for demanding rotary engine applications. These Super Seals are constructed using the same base material as the well-regarded classic RA seals. However, they undergo a proprietary secondary treatment process. This process significantly enhances their resistance to high heat, raising the annealing temperature by approximately 80% compared to standard seals. This increased heat tolerance provides a crucial margin of safety, especially in engines operating under high boost or subjected to nitrous injection, and gives the seals their characteristic black color. Under extreme conditions that reach the critical annealing temperature, the typical failure mode for RA seals is a 'sag' in the center, leading to a loss of compression and power but preventing catastrophic damage to the rotor housing or rotors. The Super Seals' higher annealing temperature delays this failure point, offering greater durability and reliability. It is important to note that RA Super Seals do not include springs. The manufacturer recommends using high-nickel content racing springs, such as their own or Mazda OEM springs, for optimal high-temperature performance. Furthermore, the seals are a direct drop-in replacement for stock Mazda 2mm seals, requiring no engine modifications. However, as with all engine components, proper installation and the condition of the engine's rotors and housings are critical for longevity.
