Randall Cowl Intake V2

The Flyin Miata Randall Cowl Intake V2 is an innovative engine intake system for 1990-1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA) models. It addresses the common issue of aftermarket intakes drawing hot air from the engine bay, which can reduce power output. By utilizing the stock intake and airbox, this system efficiently channels truly cold air from the base of the windshield, a high-pressure area, into the engine. This forced induction design results in a dyno-proven gain of 5 horsepower at the wheels, as measured with the hood closed. The Randall Cowl Intake V2 also adds a more subtle, pleasing intake growl compared to the often-excessive noise from open-air filters. The updated V2 version features a durable silicone construction for a significantly easier installation than previous rigid tube models, and it includes a new firewall plate. This plate serves multiple functions: it templates the necessary hole in the firewall, secures the clutch line, provides a clean visual, and incorporates a screen to prevent leaves and debris from entering the cowl. Installation requires cutting a 1-3/8" (35mm) hole in the firewall using a hole saw (not included), as the firewall plate acts as a template. This modification may not be permitted in some racing classes, so it is advisable to check local regulations. The system is CARB approved (EO D-601-5), making it legal in all 50 US states. However, it is not compatible with right-hand drive models or the Flyin Miata master cylinder brace. If used with a cowl washer bottle, the parts will fit, but the washer bottle may sit very close to the intake mouth, potentially reducing the power gain from 5 hp to approximately 3 hp.
