SuperMatic 6L80-E Automatic Transmission

The LS SuperMatic 4WD 6L80-E is a robust six-speed automatic transmission, built upon the design found in production vehicles like the Camaro and Chevy trucks. It has been enhanced with specific internal components to achieve an impressive 650 lb.-ft. output torque rating, a 45-percent increase over standard production six-speed transmissions. This electro-hydraulically controlled transmission employs a modular design with a clutch-to-clutch shift operation, distinguishing it from earlier GM automatics like the 4L60 and 4L80 Series. It features three gearsets—an input planetary gearset and two output gearsets, including a compound gearset. This arrangement facilitates optimal ratio steps with a 6.04:1 overall spread. Gear changes from second to sixth are managed by precisely engaging and disengaging clutches, while the first to second upshift utilizes a freewheeling action. Equipped with a 32-bit controller integrated internally for stable temperatures, this unit monitors and compensates for component wear, ensuring consistent performance. The controller also optimizes component interaction. The deep 4.02:1 first gear provides strong off-the-line acceleration, complemented by smooth, quick upshifts. Despite its advanced features, the transmission maintains an overall length of approximately 23.5 inches, making it a suitable resto-mod complement for LS crate engines. The kit includes the transmission, a controller with street and track calibrations, and a harness.
