The Genuine BMW 11538642560 is an engine coolant thermostat assembly, often referred to as a heat management module (HMM). Unlike traditional thermostats, the HMM utilizes a rotary valve that can adjust coolant flow to different passageways, enabling faster warm-up and accurate temperature management. A common failure mode for this module is a restriction in coolant flow, often due to the rotary valve getting stuck in the warm-up position. This can lead to the engine running hotter than intended. Typical fault codes associated with a failing HMM include 20F220, 20F206, and 20A704. This Genuine BMW part includes the necessary sealing o-rings and gaskets for installation. Thermostats, in general, regulate coolant flow; they remain closed when cold to speed up engine warming and open at operating temperature to maintain it. Proper installation involves ensuring the 'jiggle pin' bleed valve is at the 12 o'clock position if possible. The heat management module is a direct replacement part, ensuring a proper fit for compatible BMW vehicles.
