The BMW Genuine Parts thermostat (part number 11537549476) is engineered as a direct replacement for your vehicle's original equipment. This crucial component regulates the engine's operating temperature by controlling the flow of coolant. When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed, facilitating faster warm-up. Once the engine reaches its designed operating temperature, typically between 79-84 degrees Celsius, the thermostat opens to allow coolant circulation, preventing overheating. Failure of the thermostat can manifest in two primary ways: sticking open, which prevents the engine from reaching its optimal operating temperature. This can lead to a rich fuel mixture, reduced fuel economy, and potential damage to the catalytic converter. Alternatively, the thermostat can stick closed, restricting coolant flow and causing the engine to overheat, which can result in severe engine damage. Symptoms of a failing thermostat include an overheating engine, the engine not reaching its optimal running temperature, or the radiator fan failing to engage. This Mahle Behr thermostat is manufactured to OE specifications and is compatible with a wide range of BMW models, including various 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, and Z4 variants equipped with N51, N52, and N54 engines from approximately 2006 through 2016. Always install the thermostat with the 'jiggle pin' bleed valve oriented at the 12 o'clock position when possible.
