Top Mount Intercooler Kit

The GrimmSpeed Top Mount Intercooler Kit is engineered to replace the factory TMIC on the 2008-2014 Subaru WRX, offering superior cooling performance. As air is compressed by the turbocharger, it heats up due to molecular energy; removing this heat makes the air denser, which helps prevent pre-detonation and allows for greater power output from the engine. The stock intercooler struggles under higher boost levels or demanding driving conditions, leading to heat soak. This kit features a precisely engineered 17.5in x 8.7in x 3.5in Cross Flow Core, designed to achieve a careful balance between maximum heat transfer and minimal pressure drop. The end tanks are constructed from cast aluminum and include a machined BPV flange for a precise fit and reliable seal. For durability in demanding environments, custom-molded and reinforced 5-ply silicone couplers are used. Additionally, stainless steel BPV studs are included to prevent damage to fragile aluminum threads. Each unit is cleaned, inspected, and sealed before shipping to prevent motor damage from foreign materials. Performance testing on a 2012 WRX showed that while ambient and pre-intercooler temperatures were similar between the GrimmSpeed unit and the OEM TMIC, the GrimmSpeed intercooler consistently maintained post-intercooler temperatures between 30-40F, whereas the OEM unit fluctuated significantly between 35-75F. This consistent cooling is attributed to the bar and plate core's high heat transfer surface area and large cross-sectional flow area, which minimizes added restriction.
