The Forge Motorsport Turbo Blanket (FMTUBL1) is engineered to manage the intense radiant heat generated by your turbocharger. By effectively insulating the hot side of the turbo, it shields surrounding engine components, contributing to their longevity. This containment of heat also plays a crucial role in performance enhancements, helping to reduce turbo lag and lower intake air temperatures by preventing heat transfer into the intake tract. This improved thermal management allows for denser air charge, enabling the engine to receive more oxygen and thus produce increased power. Constructed with a durable carbon fabric outer shell and a calcium magnesium silicate wool inner core, this turbo blanket is built to withstand extreme temperatures. It features stainless steel rivets and fasteners for robust assembly. The interior surface can withstand a maximum of 2300°F (1260°C), with a continuous use limit of 1832°F (1000°C). The exterior surface has a direct contact limit of 1800°F (982°C) and a radiant heat limit of 2500°F (1371°C), showcasing its high-performance capabilities. Installation notes indicate that while the process is generally achievable, it can be challenging due to limited space, particularly on AWD vehicles like the Golf R where access from underneath is restricted. Some users recommend using tools like a grabber and rubber gloves for better grip, and patience. It's important to note that for the retaining springs, only the driver's side spring should be attached around the exhaust housing. Attaching the spring on the passenger side may interfere with the wastegate actuator, potentially causing overboost or underboost conditions that could lead to engine failure. Regular inspection for oil leaks is advised, as oil contamination can lower the flashpoint of the blanket's materials, posing a fire risk. This turbo blanket is specifically designed for the 2015+ Volkswagen Golf Mk7 GTI and R models, and is compatible with various turbocharger types including T4, T5, TD05, T25, and Garrett's GTX range (e.g., gtx 3071).
