The Isuzu 4JB1T is a robust 2,771 cc inline-four turbo-diesel engine manufactured between 1993 and 2002. Its mechanical turbocharger delivers strong low-end torque, making it a workhorse for SUVs and light commercial vehicles. Technical specifications highlight its 93.0 mm bore and 102.0 mm stroke, resulting in a displacement of 2,771 cc. The engine features a SOHC 8-valve configuration and a 21.0:1 compression ratio. It generates a peak power output of 88 kW (120 PS) at 4,000 rpm, accompanied by 284 Nm of torque at 2,200 rpm. The 4JB1T is a water-cooled engine with a gear-driven timing system and a fixed geometry, wastegate-controlled turbocharger. This engine found its primary application in the Isuzu Bighorn (known globally as the Trooper) from 1993 to 1998, and the Isuzu MU (Amigo) from 1993 to 2002. It was also utilized in the Opel/Vauxhall Frontera (as the 2.8 TD) during the same production years, reflecting the co-development between Isuzu and General Motors. The 4JB1T meets Euro 2 emissions standards. The 4JB1T is known for its long-term reliability, largely due to its simple, overbuilt mechanical design, including a gear-driven timing system. Key maintenance points include the mechanical injection pump and the turbocharger wastegate actuator, which are common wear items. With diligent maintenance, these engines can achieve well over 300,000 km.
